An
ayurvedic practitioner in the city
claims to have revived an ancient
formula to cure ulcerative colitis,
a chronic disorder of the large intestine,
which was hitherto considered incurable
and which turns into cancer of the
colon,with time.
A person afflicted
with ulcerative colitis suffers from
frequent passage of liquid stools
containing blood and mucus, cramps
in the stomach, low grade fever and
loss of energy and weight. In severe
cases, there are signs of dehydration
and anemia and the patient may also
require blood transfusions. According
to the allopathic system of medicine,
where it is considered to be a medico-surgical
problem, the last step is surgery
to remove the affected colon, which
immensely debilitates the patient,
bringing him very close to death. Dr
Harish K. Verma says he has cured
many patients who had been condemned
to hang on to steroids for dear life,
as that is the only way open to the
allopaths.
Dr Verma says
that since ayurvedic system does not
rely on any scientific method of diagnosing,
he has treated patients whose disease
had been determined through well-established
tests - sigmoiodoscopy, colonoscopy,
biopsy and barium enema - at the premier
allopathic institutes like the PGI
in Chandigarh and AIIMS in Delhi.
The doctor
has developed a herbal compound mainly
comprising the pulp of bael fruit.
He says that patients whose chief
diet has become steroids and who have
suffered from the side-effects of
these, in addition to the main disease,
have been weaned off steroids within
a month of ayurvedic treatment. Fresh
cases have responded even more quickly,

Dr
Verma. Overall, there is a marked
improvement from as early as the fifth
or seventh day of treatment. Even
patients who have been on allopathic
medicines for the last several years
have gone into remission with change
in treatment and they are leading
normal, drug-free lives now. So far,
there has been no case of relapse.

Ms
Khanna, a housewife from panchkula,
who was taking medicine from the PGI
prior to going on the ayurvedic course,
has recovered completely after suffering
for nine years. She took ayurvedic
medicine only for six months. The
doctors at the PGI who conducted tests
on her before and after the ayurvedic
treatment, are amazed at the results.
Ms Poonam,
another patient was cured in just
three to four months. What worked
for her was that she was not exposed
to steroids.
Mr S. S. Grewal's story is perhaps
the longest. He has been living with
the affliction for the past 33 years.
The steroids have reduced him to a
shadow of himself. The steroids have
been a drain on the body's calcium
reserves which makes him feel feeble
in the bones. His teeth have been
affected and so has his evesight for
which he has undergone operations.

After
surviving on steroidsfor 10-12 years,
he started taking Dr Verms's medicine
in july, and there is marked improvement,
already. "I feel like a normal
person with a normal stomach, after
a very long time," Mr Grewal
says.
Another patient,
Mr Sukhwinder Pal Singh contracted
this disease in 1992. In six months,
he lost 20 kg of weight and his haemoglobin
dropped to seven counts. The endescopy
test conducted at PGI confirmed his
fears. He was advised by his doctor
there to seek cut Dr Verma. After
two months of that, the tests showed
70 percent improvement. "I am
working like a normal being now,"
he said. His haemoglobin count is
back to 12 points and his bowel movement
is also normalising.
Many patients
were skeptical of the remedy because
it worked too fast! "Some of
them even got it tested at the clinical
laboratories expecting to find traces
of allopathic salts," says Dr
Verma. "They all came back with
the query that when the allopathic
doctors had told them there was no
cure for this disease in the world,
how did I do it," he said. "There
is need to realise that Ayurvedic
system still holds water," Dr
Harish Verma asserts.
He is anguished
to see so many people suffering because
of the supercilious attitued of the
mainline doctors. They see red every
time ayurveda shows good results.
Contrary to the attitude of Indian
doctors, those in the USA, to whom
he has sent the initial results of
his medicine, have been impressed
and keep inquiring about the progress.
Dr Verma hopes to unravel the etiological
factors of the disease with a little
help from these agencies. |
